It’s been a challenging year for CBC’s Count Me In project at Vista Del Mar. Following last spring’s highly successful pilot project (Jan. – May 2013), we dove into the new school year with the CUP (Contemporary Urban Percussion) program expecting similar results each semester of this school year (Fall 2013, Spring 2014). Instead, we were faced with numerous challenges that surfaced during the fall semester and continued during the spring semester. Despite the best collaborative efforts of everyone involved, many of the students we served at Vista (young teens with an array of behavior disorders) proved to be disinterested (at best) in our efforts to offer them a twice-weekly music-based option to their regular school curriculum. While our research data indicate modest improvements for students in terms of their attendance, behavior, collaborate abilities and rhythmic knowledge, we’re rethinking the long-term viability of providing the CUP curriculum to students at this particular location..
